From 3 to 6 July Manchester Cathedral is to host the biggest flower installation the region has seen for over 50 years. 20,000 flowers will be arranged by 100 floral artists drawn from clubs and societies across Greater Manchester.
Helen Bamping, Cathedral head flower arranger and event coordinator, said; "We regularly design displays for weddings or memorial services-such as George Best's. What we are designing this time is even bigger than what we did for the Queen's Royal Maundy service. With so many groups coming from all over Greater Manchester, people will have seen nothing like this - it will be breath-taking."
The 20,000 blooms are being driven from Holland and include tropical flowers and thousands of red roses. Once the flowers have arrived, it will take the artists 24 hours to complete the displays ready for the opening event on 3 July.

Don Cupitt has long been one of the leading - certainly one of the most provocative! - theologians in this country.
On Tuesday, July 7 at 7.00pm in the Cathedral, he's launching his new book, ‘Jesus and Philosophy', published by SCM. The blurb says: ‘Around twenty years or so after his death, the fiery and interesting Jewish teacher Jesus of Nazareth was made into the personification of his own teaching, and given an exalted cosmic status. Within a few decades he had been so completely buried by supernatural beliefs about himself that in all the years since it has been very difficult to make out his own voice, and quite impossible to take him seriously as a thinker.
