The News - Cathedral News
Written by Andrew Shanks

In the space at the back of the Cathedral, under the tower, from October 29 to November 16 there is an exhibition of sculptures that depict the eight stages of grief.

They are by Jean Parker. And they derive from the artist's own experience of cancer. The eight terracotta heads emerged during the course of a seven day silent retreat, and present a powerful and unique visual exploration of the grief process from denial to peace.

The eight works flow from this sequence of reactions:

1. I'm alright (shock, masking, denial);

2. No, No (pain, protest, disbelief);

3. Why (searching, perplexed, the need to make sense of things);

4. Anger (realisation of grim reality, torment, rage, anguish);

5. Depression (desolation, despair, deep sadness);

6. Acceptance-Awareness (facing the reality of loss);

7. Healing (moving on to a peaceful place);

8. Abiding-Trusting (life no longer defined by loss).
