The Founding Principle"The society was founded to associate its members with the devotional life of the Cathedral: to assist the Dean and Canons with funds to preserve the fabric of the Cathedral and precincts; to help enrich the ornaments and furnishings of the Cathedral". As one would expect the Friends of Manchester Cathedral are scattered throughout the country. From a nucleus of those living in the Greater Manchester area, a Council is elected and join with the Dean and other Office Bearers in organising the social calendar of the Friends and planning 'projects' for that they choose to support. This often takes the form of raising substantial amounts of capital and over recent years has included the purchase of: The Five West Windows : The St George Window (1973), The St Denys Window (1976), The St Mary Window (1980), The Creation Window (1991) and The Revelation Window (1995), all modern stained glass by Anthony Hollaway; an Oak Table for the Chapter House; Copes and Stoles, Cushions and many more invaluable items. Council members are elected for a period of 3 years and then they must retire. They are eligible for re-election after a year has elapsed. The Friends of the Cathedral come from all areas of Cathedral life; some are guides, others are on the flower rota, others still help in the running of the Cathedral Shop, and more still help to 'man' the exhibitions and steward any big events. We keep our all members of the Friends up-to-date by sending out 2 mailings per year. MembershipMembership of the Friends is variable.
