Aims and Benefits

Every generation has a chance to leave its mark on our nation’s great buildings. The Manchester Cathedral Development Project provides an opportunity to secure a 600-year music tradition, develop the Cathedral buildings, and enhance the immediate environment of the Cathedral.

What we hope to do

The main aims of the project are:

  • To make the Cathedral fit for the 21st century – by improving the facilities within the building, including heating, lighting and renewing the roof.
  • To play a part in redesigning the immediate environment – by helping to create a series of new public realm spaces around the Cathedral.
  • To ensure our 600-year tradition of choral music continues – by creating a music endowment fund.
  •  Installing a new organ.

Benefiting the whole community

We are confident that renewing Manchester Cathedral and its immediate environment will benefit the whole community including the congregation, the socially disadvantaged, those of school age, adults seeking training and employment, tourists to the region, those interested in the arts, music, worship and heritage.

At the centre of economic renewal

Our vision for the future shows the Cathedral’s potential to contribute to the success of Manchester and Salford, in both spiritual and economic terms. In addition to religious services with a strong choral tradition, the Cathedral plans to offer the building as a unique venue for the arts, concerts, functions and great civic events.

In addition, the Cathedral will play a significant role in the creation of a new tourist destination, to be known as Medieval Manchester. The vision is based on our understanding of God who seeks to enhance life in all its fullness, and who calls us to work for justice, peace and inclusion in our world. In broad terms, it is a vision based on conversation, community cohesion, compassion and culture.
