Opportunity for pupils to put the world to rights through drama

The CMS team and Big Intent Theatre Company are back at Manchester Cathedral this June; engaging young people in creative arts to explore the issues behind child rights. Schools are invited to explore ‘children's rights' through dramatic techniques, including role play and physical theatre.
The World to Rights day is made up of educational workshops and a performance. Starting with a basic knowledge of Rights, the children explore Victorian times with workshops including: life in the cotton mill, life on the streets of London and a ragged school, and finally life in a circus. Various scenes portraying children's exploitation 150 years ago help participating pupils to gain a sense of privilege, and responsibility to others around the world today who still have no rights.
The drama is especially suitable for pupils in Years 5-8 and links to the National Curriculum in RE, PSHE, History and Citizenship. The CMS website provides teachers with follow up materials, lesson plans and resources to enable classes to continue to explore the themes and issues raised. There is a cost of £5 per pupil for this whole day activity, which covers the costs of the actors and workshop leaders. Parents, teachers and fellow pupils are welcome to attend the free performance in the afternoon of the workshops - please invite them (we would be grateful if you could let us know numbers in advance).
