St John Passion

Date: 25 March 2012

Tickets are now available for St John Passion on Sunday 25 March at 7.30pm.

St John Passion (in German: Johannes-Passion), is a sacred oratorio of Johann Sebastian Bach. During the first winter that Bach was responsible for church music at the St. Thomas Church, Leipzig and the St. Nicholas Church, he composed the St John Passion for the Good Friday Vespers service of 1724.  The St John Passion is a dramatic representation of the Passion, as told in the Gospel of John, constructed of dramatically presented recitatives and choruses, commented by reflective chorales and arias, framed by large opening and closing choruses. It will be performed by Manchester Cathedral Choir and a period instrument orchestra - similar forces to that of the first performance 288 years ago in Leipzig – conducted by Christopher Stokes.
