Martha Reeves / Maggie Ross, ‘Behold Not the Cloud of Experience: Some Thoughts on “Mystical Theology”’

Date: 31 May 2012 (7pm)

Martha Reeves is the real name of ‘Maggie Ross’, one of the most original (and acerbic!) of contemporary writers on mystical spirituality.

From her potted biography: ‘She is an Anglican solitary under vows to the Archbishop of Canterbury and a Stanford educated professor of theology who, up until recently, spent her summers fishing in Alaska and her winters teaching chiefly in Oxford. Her book The Fire of Your Life is about the year she spent living in a tent on the Big Sur coast in California. She says that the two remarks people often make, on learning about her life choice, are: “You don’t look like a hermit” and “What do you do in solitude?” In 1999 she came 37th in the Juneau, Golden North Salmon Derby. She has published numerous books on religion and spirituality, and is not a member of any Motown soul groups’!

(Note: this event is in the Cathedral Library, as the Nave is in use for another event. If you arrive in time, the best way in is by way of the office door. This is off to the right of the main entrance, behind the metal railings; the door under the Eric Gill carving. Then ring the bell. If you’re a bit late, you’ll need to come through the main part of the Cathedral. We’ll of course notify the organizers of the other event that there may be some late-comers.)
