Cathedral Choir

The Cathedral Choir consists of up to 20 trebles (boys and girls) and 9 Lay-Clerks, who are all professional singers in and around Manchester. The Choir is directed by the Organist & Master of the Choristers, Christopher Stokes.

The children attend the internationally renowned Chetham's School of Music, next to the Cathedral, from the age of 8 until 13. At that point, many re-enter the school as instrumentalists and remain until they complete their secondary education. This affords them an unparalleled musical education in a city renowned for its musical prowess.

There are nine Lay Clerks at Manchester Cathedral, 3 each of alto, tenor and bass. They sing at least 4 services each week, alongside the Choristers; in addition they occasionally appear in their own right, singing a wide ranging repertoire from medieval to modern. Many also pursue a solo singing career.

Opportunities are always available for singers to join our list of deputy Lay Clerks; please contact the Organist & Master of the Choristers to arrange an audition.
