Winter 2015

Christmas has been celebrated in this medieval corner of Manchester every single year from its origins in the heart of the olde towne through to the present day. This winter’s events programme is packed with a dazzling array of events to take you through from the late autumn sunshine to the winter festive season. We play host to Melvyn Bragg and Elif Shafak, E.T and a host of musicians. We will be sleeping out in November and staying up for Midnight Mass in December.

Open every day of the year for services or if you just want to light a candle. Winter and Christmas at Manchester Cathedral. Come and celebrate with us.

Manchester Sleepout 2015

Manchester Sleepout 2015

Members of the Cathedral staff have formed a team and are participating in the Manchester Sleepout on Friday 6 November. We are hoping to raise funds for the Booth Centre so please give what you can! This is the third year that the Cathedral team has participated, last year we raised over £2,200, it would be great to beat this target and with your help we will!

Vacancy: Sydney Nicholson Organ Scholarship 2016-2017

The Dean and Chapter of Manchester Cathedral are now inviting applications for the 2016-2017 Sydney Nicholson Organ Scholarship, which will have the privilege of playing our new four manual organ (to be installed in the autumn of 2016). The scholarship is paid and accommodation is also included.

Closing date for applications is 1 November 2015 with interviews and auditions scheduled 9 November 2015.

At 10.30am we will have a traditional Harvest Eucharist at which you are all invited to bring a harvest gift for the Booth Centre.

In the evening we will be joining our friends at St Ann's for a special Joint Harvest Celebration at 6.30pm, Canon David Holgate will be the preacher. All welcome.

Manchester Cathedral launches a ‘decorate an organ pipe’ competition for local schools

The organ is at the very centre of Manchester Cathedral’s music making and is in use virtually every day. With its origins in the 19th century the organ was restored and enlarged between 1952 and 1957, following extensive war damage. This rebuilt instrument, however, had inherent issues with location, look and tone, hence the need now for a new organ. The Manchester Cathedral Organ has been supported and funded by Mr Norman Stoller, through The Stoller Charitable Trust. The new instrument will be installed in 2016. We envisage that it will be formally dedicated in 2017.

Join us for an evening of creative art, reflection and music at Manchester Cathedral on Friday 18 September at 7pm. International artist Ghislaine Howard named ‘Woman of the Year’ in 2008 for her contribution to art and society will talk about her inspiration and practice in relation to her life size painting of The Return of the Prodigal Son currently on display at the cathedral until the 20th September.
