Vacancy: Residentiary Canon Pastor

The closing date for this position has now passed.

The Bishop of Manchester, in consultation with the Dean and Chapter, seeks to appoint a Canon Pastor at this busy, urban Cathedral.

This new and exciting post will provide pastoral care to our various and often transient congregations and foster spiritual development and numerical growth. The Canon Pastor will also be expected to discern and establish a number of newer areas of ministry, which will be supported by other members of the clergy team under the leadership of the Dean.

Revealing the Cathedral’s ceiling bosses

If you have visited the Cathedral recently, you have seen the scaffolding around the Quire for the structural works to the Pulpitum. While the scaffolding has temporarily obscured the medieval woodwork of the Quire and screen, it has also provided us with access to some of the wonderful pieces in the highest points of the building that are usually hidden from view. You may also have noticed the beautifully cleaned archway! In addition, some of the ceiling carvings have been re-gilded.

Photographer Robert Watson, who had an exhibition at the Cathedral in March, kindly agreed to capture some images of the ceiling carvings from the top of the scaffold. Staff at the Cathedral and at Chetham’s Library were very excited to be able to see many of these carvings for the first time!

Manchester Cathedral is pleased to announce the relaunch of Manchester Children’s Choir. Manchester Children’s Choir was founded in 1920s by composer Sir Hamilton Harty, who had the aim to make choral music and singing accessible to all children of Manchester and Salford, regardless of ability or background.

Elisabeth Quick to represent Manchester Cathedral at Diamond Fund Concert

Nation's choristers will swell the sound of music in St Paul's

To help raise funds to ensure that the nation's world-renowned cathedral music is preserved for the future, the Friends of Cathedral Music (FCM) is kick-starting a £10m fund with a national concert at St Paul's Cathedral where the resident choir will be joined by a cathedral chorister from the majority of the nation's cathedrals, some 60 in all.

Elisabeth Quick will represent Manchester Cathedral.

The Capture the Cathedral competition is now open!

The Capture the Cathedral photography competition is now in its fourth year.

Photographers of all ages, backgrounds and experience levels are invited to 'Capture the Cathedral' in different and imaginative ways.

The overall winner will win an overnight stay for two with breakfast at the Renaissance Manchester City Centre Hotel and a meal for two at Harvey Nichols.

Beacon to be lit at Manchester Cathedral to celebrate Her Majesty’s 90th Birthday on Thursday 21 April

To celebrate The Queen’s 90th Birthday, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales will invite Her Majesty The Queen to light the Principal Beacon on 21st April at Windsor Castle. This will be followed by the lighting of a number of Beacons along the Long Walk, Windsor Great Park, including one at the Copper Horse, and then over 1,000 beacons will be lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, UK overseas Territories and a Commonwealth Country to celebrate this landmark birthday.

Prayers for Lahore

On Saturday 2 April, members of the public are invited to join us for a special prayer vigil to remember the victims of the Taliban bombing in Lahore, Pakistan in which over 70 people were killed. The prayer vigil will take place from 12 noon to 2pm at Manchester Cathedral.
