Clergy Shoe Shine

Clergy Shoe Shine

The clergy from Manchester Cathedral shined the shoes of shoppers in Manchester Arndale on Maundy Thursday.

This quirky idea has a serious message aiming to emulate Jesus washing the feet of his followers 2000 years ago and the subsequent tradition of the clergy washing parishioners feet on the Thursday before Easter for centuries.

Thank you to Manchester Arndale for allowing us to shine shoes and to all those who took part.

Visit our Facebook page to view photographs from the event.

Manchester Cathedral Clergy embark on Easter ‘sole’ searching with shoe shining initiative at Manchester Arndale

Manchester Cathedral Clergy embark on Easter ‘sole’ searching with shoe shining initiative at Manchester Arndale

The clergy from Manchester Cathedral will be in Manchester Arndale on Maundy Thursday between 11.00 am and 12.00 noon, for a unique initiative to shine the shoes of the public.

Although the initiative will allow the public some ‘sole’ searching and may also result in helping the public ‘heal’ their everyday worries by talking to clergy, the quirky idea has a serious message aiming to emulate Jesus washing the feet of his followers 2000 years ago and the subsequent tradition of the clergy washing parishioners feet on the Thursday before Easter for centuries. The shoe-shine event is a modern twist on this tradition, and it is the sixth year that the event has taken place.

A special prayer station has been set up in Manchester Cathedral to remember those devastated by the French Alps Plane Crash. Members of the public are invited to say a prayer and light a candle.

God our creator, hear us as we pray for those who have died in this disaster especially Marina Bandres Lopez-Beliobe and her seven month old son, Julian from our own community here in Manchester.
Be with those who in this time of pain are providing care and turn our eyes to your mercy in this time of confusion and loss. Comfort those who mourn the loss of loved ones because of this disaster. Shine your light on those whose only companion is darkness. Through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
