Monday 17 October 2016: Heroes Parade

On Monday 17 October 2016, Manchester will host a national parade for Team GB and ParalympicsGB to welcome home our Olympic and Paralympic heroes and celebrate their phenomenal success in Rio.

Setting off from outside the Museum of Science and Industry, the parade will enter the Liverpool Road junction of Deansgate at 4.30pm before completing a route through the city centre, ending in Albert Square.

BBC Radio 2 Young Choristers of the Year Competition 2016

On Monday 24 October 2016, Diane Louise Jordan hosts the grand final of BBC Radio 2 Young Choristers of the Year Competition 2016 from Manchester Cathedral. From the eight finalists, one girl and one boy will each be awarded the title BBC Radio 2 Young Chorister of the Year, 2016.

World renowned composer, Bob Chilcott, chairs a panel of expert judges whilst Irish singing sensations, The Priests, provide a special performance.

Each year the Booth Centre invites people to take on the challenge of sleeping out to highlight some of the hardships that homeless people have to face every single night.

Cathedral staff and clergy will take part in the #McrSleepout and sleep under the stars to raise money for the Booth Centre.

Installation of the new organ

Installation of the new organ

The new organ, which received generous funding from the Stoller Charitable Trust, is being mounted on the quire screen at the centre of the building. The project is a major step in achieving our aim to secure a 600-year music tradition at the Cathedral. The new instrument will provide new learning opportunities and support both the choir and the congregation for many years to come.

Voluntary Choir on tour

Every year, the Voluntary Choir of Manchester Cathedral go on tour, often to a British cathedral, for the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of August.

This year, the choir were privileged to sing at Norwich Cathedral. The cathedral was mainly built between 1096 and 1145, with changes in the meantime. Its soaring spire is the second tallest in England after Salisbury Cathedral.

Capture the Cathedral: The People’s Choice

Capture the Cathedral: The People’s Choice

For the past four years, Manchester Cathedral has organised a photography competition, Capture the Cathedral. Last month Gary Duncan was announced as the overall winner of the competition.

The winning photos and a selection of entries were displayed at Manchester Cathedral and visitors to the cathedral and Facebook followers were invited to vote for their favourite photo during this time.

We are pleased to announce that the winner of the Capture the Cathedral People’s Choice 2016 is ‘Reflecting’ by Sandy Sharples.

Manchester Children's Choir - 3 September 2016

Manchester Cathedral has relaunched Manchester Children’s Choir. Manchester Children’s Choir was founded in 1920s by composer Sir Hamilton Harty, who had the aim to make choral music and singing accessible to all children of Manchester and Salford, regardless of ability or background.
