The End of Words
Last Updated on Thursday, 11 February 2010 14:45
For the last seventeen years or so, Canon Radcliffe has provided poems on the Passion of Christ for the Cathedral’s mid-day Good Friday service. Twenty two of these have been put together in a booklet, The End of Words, which will be launched at the Cathedral on Sunday February 14th, following the 10.30 morning service.
The booklet costs £5 and can be purchased at the Cathedral bookshop together with other collections of his poems. These include Homeless, sold to raise money for the Cathedral’s Booth Centre for the Homeless; Ex Cathedra; The Green Man and Other Poems and A Wall of Light, poems on Antony Hollaway’s modern glass.
The Great Invitation

News of an exhibition by local artist Mildred Cooper
We are happy to host the exhibition of Mildred Cooper’s second series of work on biblical themes.
The exhibition takes the theme of ‘illustrating God’s love for us’. The images all relate to the prophetic words of Isaiah 61: 1—2, quoted by Jesus, right at the beginning of his ministry, in Luke 4: 18—19: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me, to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour’.
Time to be a part of it all.

As the Cathedral Development Project begins to reach out to congregation and City, Canon Andrew Shanks overcomes his embarrassment and reflects on the spirituality of giving.
I’m embarrassed already. And I’m afraid I’m going to end up squirming with embarrassment. Manchester Cathedral urgently needs to raise money, to continue, and extend its work.
Over the next few months, all of us who are associated with the place are going to be approached, and asked if we can help. And many of us are going to be given the task of approaching others, to ask that question of them.
I know I shouldn’t be embarrassed about doing this. Such embarrassment is a kind of vanity.
Reimagining Anglicanism
Last Updated on Thursday, 11 February 2010 14:41
I’VE JUST published a little book. It’s called Anglicanism Reimagined. And it’s based on a paradoxical argument for being glad to belong to the Church of England today. There has, in my view, never been a better time to be part of this Church. Clearly, there’s an element of paradox here.
A successful Church will, we assume, be a growing Church. Of course it will. Won’t it? It will, no doubt, try to be.
But a successful Church is first and foremost, surely, one which serves to open up God’s truth. And there are certain aspects of God’s truth that can – on the contrary – only come to light through a Church’s experience of being shrunk. That our Church is shrinking – isn’t it the proper response of faith to see this as divine providence at work? In order truly to succeed, we must first, in a worldly sense, fail.
For a Church properly to open up God’s truth there must surely be no element of selfaggrandisement in what it preaches. The gospel needs to be sharply distinguished from Church ideology, no matter how orthodox the
latter may be. An arrogant Church, infested by a spirit of corporate boastfulness, may well attract converts: people are attracted by slick arrogance. They feel fl attered to belong. But, by virtue of its worldly success, such a Church fails.
