Bishop blesses city from top of Manchester Wheel, meets shoppers, sees regeneration plans and visits new Co-op HQ
The Bishop of Manchester made a special visit to Manchester last week. In a five hour visit to the cathedral and City, the Rt Revd Nigel McCulloch visited West Properties UK Ltd to see plans for the redevelopment of the Renaissance Hotel. He visited the Coop Bank's new HQ, meeting Peter Marks, Group Chief Executive. He then met shoppers in the Arndale centre, before taking a ride on the Wheel of Manchester, pausing to bless this city from the top.
The Dean of Manchester, the Very Revd Rogers Govender, escorted the Bishop on his visit. The Dean said; "The plans to transform the area around the Cathedral are slowly coming together. In partnership with cities of Salford and Manchester, the business community, and Chetham's School we hope to develop a new destination for Manchester, known as the Medieval Quarter. The Bishop's visit is a chance for him to meet our partners and share our vision with him."

Can you help us?

Manchester is the second most visited city in England and the Cathedral has become one of the top places for tourists to visit in the City, attracting people in their thousands each year.
We need more volunteer Welcomers and Guides to help visitors feel welcome and discover more about the building.
As the first point of contact between the Church and the outside world, our Cathedral Welcomers ensure that visitors are greeted with warmth, and this helps to preserve the Cathedral's positive relationship with its congregation, local community and visitors.
If you have good people skills and would like to help and join our budding and friendly team, we would love to hear from you!
Art 4 God

The ‘Art 4 God' exhibition in the Regiment Chapel of the Cathedral is an initiative seeking to encourage Manchester artists, with church connections, of every kind all the exhibits are A4 size, and all are, in one way or another, a response to the inspiration that their creators have found in church life.
Organised by Andrea Sarginson of the Diocesan Advisory Committee (supervising the care of church buildings in the diocese), the opening of this exhibition was timed to coincide with the meeting last month in Manchester of Diocesan Advisory Committee people from all around the country. But it continues until the end of October.
New Archive Assistant

Starting this month, we have a new Archives Assistant: Helen Brearley. Helen will be with us for the next six months, helping get our archives in order and responding to all the many enquiries we receive from people researching their ancestors etc. She'll be working half the week with us, and the other half in the Diocesan Archives at the City Library. We are very grateful for the support of the Friends of Manchester Cathedral in helping make this possible.
Meanwhile, work continues on the project of compiling the definitive study of the history of our Cathedral, back to its foundation as a Collegiate Church in 1421 and beyond.
