Manchester Lit and Phil - (Discussion for lively minds since 1781) presents an Evening with Dean Rogers Govender (MBE)

Cathedral Lecture - produced in partnership with Manchester Cathedral presents an Evening with Dean Rogers Govender (MBE)

This year we mark the 600th anniversary of the Collegiate Church and Dean Rogers Govender’s talk will focus on the last century and bring us to the present day.  The cathedral building has survived the damage sustained during the Second World War, and the IRA bomb in 1996, with all the restoration work needed at those times.  Further developments followed in 2013 to bring facilities up to date, and to cope with the needs of 21st Century.  This talk will highlight some of the personalities who made this a living Cathedral, that serves the city region and diocese as Mother Church.  There will also be some highlights of the fabric development, as the Cathedral has sought to serve the growing needs of this city and region.  Today this ‘Living Cathedral’ continues its service through generous benefactors, not all Christian, and their recognition of the role of a Cathedral, in a modern secular city in the United Kingdom.

About the speaker

The Very Reverend Rogers Govender MBE has been the Dean of Manchester Cathedral since 2006. He is a sixth generation South African and was England's first black Cathedral Dean.  He trained for the ministry in Grahamstown and continued his vocation in the dioceses of Durban and Natal in South Africa.  He moved to Manchester, with his family, in 2002, where he was priest-in-charge at Christ Church, Didsbury, and Area Dean of Withington. As Dean at Manchester Cathedral, he has learnt about how a city and diocese operate, and the importance of networks and partnership, working to achieve the purposes of God in mission, ministry, and outreach to the community.  In 2018 he was awarded an MBE for his services to interfaith relations and to the community of Manchester.
