Manchester Children's Choir

Children’s Choir takes place on a Friday at 5.00pm in the Cathedral Song School.

There have been numerous studies over the last few years celebrating the fact that learning to sing in a choir can help children in many ways. There are five main areas of reported benefits from singing. These include, physical, psychological, social, musical and educational.

In our sessions, children learn and have fun through singing and musical games. The children will learn to sing a wide variety of songs and play music games to encourage social interaction, physical co-ordination and self-confidence. They learn to pitch and perform simple melodies and grasp basic rhythms and pulse. We aim to have one concert per term to show family and friends what we have been learning.

Here is some information for the budding historian!Children from the Choir

Manchester Children’s Choir was founded in 1920s by composer Sir Hamilton Harty, who had the aim to make choral music and singing accessible to all children of Manchester and Salford, regardless of ability or background. The original Manchester Children’s Choir was famous for their recording of Purcell’s Nymphs and Shepherds with the Hallé Orchestra which sold over one million copies, however the choir soon disbanded after the outbreak of World War II.
